I found this little tool while looking up ideas for closure in a lesson. One suggestion is that students log on after school and post a sentence summarizing that day's topic. It. Becomes a collage of sentences which could be used to review for an exam later. Simpler than a forum. This could also be a sourced for flashcards. I've included here a screenshot of what will become our wall for the topic of motion. You can choose the font and the background image. You can even select the privacy settings for who can see and edit the page.

Cut Me In: An app similar to Paint but for iPad

One of my students named Yessica found this free app that students can use to overlap two images.

You can choose a background such as places, animals, landscapes or you can upload your own image. Then simply take a new photo or upload a new photo and follow the simple instructions on how to "Cut" and then "Paste" into your background.

I love how tactile this app is. You can use two fingers to rotate your image.

Cost:
Free, but it has ads.
$1.99 with no adds.

I created the following example in less than 2 minutes.

Microsoft paint: Overlapping images

Microsoft Paint is an easy to use photo editing software and the best part is that it is FREE. You can open images with Paint and edit them. I created the image to the left by uploading two images into two different sessions of Paint and then tracing the lion head from one, copying, and pasting it into the other one.

Cost: Free

These were the three tools I used:

How to Create overlapping images using Paint:

  • Step 1: Open the image you will be cutting from with Paint.
  • Step 2: Use the "Select" function with the "Free-form selection". This will allow you to trace out your image.
  • Step 3: Select "Copy"
  • Step 4: Open the image you will be pasting to with Paint.
  • Step 5: "Paste" image.
  • Step 6: Select "Transparent selection" to eliminate white space.
  • Step 7: If you want your image to face another way, you can select the "Rotate" function which has many options. For my lion, I wanted him to face to the right, not the left so I selected the "Flip horizontal" function.

Weebly

I couldn't leave out one of the easiest, free web-creating tools that I have seen on the internet.

So easy to navigate. You have many themes to choose from. You can see the control buttons on the left. Just drag and drop the components that you want. No crazy html code. Making pages and connecting them to pages inside your website or to other websites is so easy. They even have an educator's version where you can create class pages.

If you decide to create a website with Weebly, then ... mayhaps you can refer me?  We can EACH get $10. Yes, you heard right. They will pay both YOU AND ME TEN SWEET DOLLARS. <3  kthxbai

Cost: Option of Free version (which is pretty awesome. I use it) or Pro version for $39.95 which allows fancier things though I don't know that you can get any fancier than what we already have here.

Penultimate is another app that I use on my iPad.

Cost: Free

I use it to take notes and to work out problems. Sometimes students want to work out problems in front of the class on the dry erase board and other times they want to use my iPad to project their work on the screen.

You can even take photographs with your iPad and import them into the app to write on them:

Google SketchUp

Although  I love my pencil and paper, the problem is that it is in black and white.

I love using Google SketchUp to see how different textures such as wood, different color tiles, and glass look against each other.

You can draw in 3-D with pencil and paper, but Google SketchUp allows you to rotate an object to really take a look at how it will fit into a space.

Cost: Free, when downloaded from their website:
