My students are the first introduction that I have had to the Dominican Republic and its people. They are very patient about teaching me all of the different aspects of their culture, but I shouldn't leave to them the sole task of my Dominican history education and should do some research by myself. One of my professors gave me the link to this documentary which does a great job of quickly summarizing of the history behind the relationship between the Dominican Republic and Haiti as well as how each culture sees itself and why those belief systems developed in that way.
